Day 303 – What Are You Thinking?
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he… (Proverbs 23:7a). The heart is quite a muscle. Its two-fold function is virtually irreplaceable, without them the body dies. It seems the heart is the purification engine of our blood as well as the spiritual center of our emotions. When you say, “I want to get to the heart of the matter…” it is understood that you are talking about “the center of a thing, its core elements.”
The heart is the symbolic center of our beliefs (not necessarily the center of truth but of beliefs). That is where most of us get into trouble, because what we believe is not always the truth. Every time we separate what we believe and live by from the unchanging principles and declarations in God’s Word, we stray dangerously far from the truth! For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he… (Proverbs 23:7a). This proverb perfectly frames one of our chief problems in life—the way we think in our hearts. The things we really believe always seems to slip through the barriers we raise to fool others or hide our thoughts. Our thoughts get into our physical responses and often show up in our facial expressions. “Got a messy life? Clear up that messy heart!” Even when you carefully set goals and look forward to achieving them, the hidden things in your heart may actually hinder you! Examine your thought life and you will better understand why you do what you do. And you will discover the first place changes must take place to bring genuine change to your life.
